As Augusta, GA divorce attorneys, we certainly realize that divorce and child custody battles are no laughing matter!  But we try very hard to keep this divorce blog from getting too serious or boring, so let's start the week off with another divorce "joke of the day!"  Here's an "oldie-goldie:"

Did you know that statistics indicate that one half of all new marriages end in divorce?  Well, at least that's not as bad as the remaining half of all marriages...which end in death!

Divorce Statistics: Why is the Divorce Rate Going Up Again?

Have you seen the news?  According to various news reports, with the economy (supposedly) picking up again, the divorce rate is also rising again, too.  As Augusta, Georgia divorce attorneys, we had noticed, in our own divorce law practice, that the number of divorces seems to track, or follow, the economy. 

In other words, if you are worried about your job, or your next paycheck, then your worthless spouse, "Sluggo," might not look quite as bad!  But when you feel more secure about your own job situation, then you might be more inclined to "dump the chump!"

What is your opinion?  Is there a correlation between the economy and the divorce rate?  Put another way, do you believe that people tend to stay married longer during periods of economic recession?  Or do hard times breed hard feelings and more divorces?

Divorce Statistics: Is the Second Time Around the Charm?

So, you've divorced your worthless, God-forsaken spouse, "Sluggo," and now you believe you have finally met your soul mate. Do you believe a second marriage would have a better chance of success, following a divorce, than a first marriage? Do people learn from their mistakes?

Well...here's the sad news! According to the Enrichment Journal, and other sources, 41% of first marriages end in divorce, but 60% of second marriages, and a whopping 73% of third marriages, bite the dust!

I hate to break this bad news to you! But after your divorce, please just be careful about getting hitched again too soon! After all, maybe the new guy just seems good because anything, even a wet dish rag, would seem good after being married to "Sluggo!" What do you think!?

Divorce Rates Around the World

How does the divorce rate in your country compare with the divorce rate in other parts of the world? It should come as no surprise that the United States is among the divorce "leaders" with approximately 40% of all marriages ending in divorce, according to Wikipedia.

But Wikipedia has some other interesting facts, too. For example, in Europe, the divorce rates vary widely, from Belgium, which has a divorce rate of 2.9 per 1000, to Italy, with a rate of only 0.7 per 1000. This raises the question: Have folks in Italy discovered how to keep the romance alive, or are they just staying in bad marriages? What do you think?

But then you need to consider the divorce rates in India and Sri Lanka where, incredibly, according to Wikipedia, only one to one and a half per 1000 marriages end in divorce! What do you think are the reasons for these wide disparities in divorce rates from country to country?
