Uncontested Divorce in Georgia and What It Means










          We, at the Goolsby Law Firm, LLC, frequently receive telephone calls and email inquiries from people seeking information about how to get an uncontested divorce in the

State of Georgia. We thought it might be helpful to recap about some of the important points.

          First, it is important to understand, if you want an uncontested divorce, that you and

your spouse must have agreed on all the essential points, such as child custody and property division.  Also, it is essential that your spouse must fully cooperate and sign all the divorce documents, if it is going to truly be an uncontested divorce.

          In short, for an uncontested divorce to be truly uncontested, it is necessary that you and your spouse have already worked out all the terms, (and in a format which the court will approve), and that your spouse will cooperate and sign all the documents.

          Otherwise, you can still get a divorce, but it will likely be a contested divorce, and it may be necessary to get your spouse served with divorce papers and take him to court.

          I hope this brief summary helps explain some of the differences between uncontested and contested divorces. Of course, it is important for you to discuss these matters and all your questions about divorce with your own divorce lawyer!

Celebrity Marriages and Divorces: Usher's Child Custody Battle

Are you a fan of Usher? He appeared to be such a nice guy when he appeared as a celebrity judge on "The Voice" this past season! The well-known singer and dancer has sold over 65 million records and has six Grammy awards! But, as we have discussed before in the blog about divorce, Usher, like a lot of celebrities, has also faced his share of divorce and child custody issues.

According to various news reports, Usher's ex has filed for an emergency child custody hearing after their five year old son nearly drowned in a swimming pool at the singer's Atlanta home. Thankfully, the little boy reportedly will be okay!

Here's hoping that Usher and his ex will also find a way to resolve these and other issues without too much public scrutiny. But again, as we have discussed before, the media spotlight can be both a blessing and a curse for many celebrities facing divorce and child custody issues.

The Goolsby Law Firm Brag Board

Recently, I included a post in which I bragged about my second son Blake's passing the Georgia bar exam and joining our Augusta, Georgia family law firm. Today, I hope you don't mind that, as a proud father, I once again want to brag a little bit--this time about my third son, Zachary. Zach is home for Christmas break and has now passed the midway point of law school! 

In other words, Zach has three semesters down and only three more semesters to go until graduation! Then, I believe we will be the only law firm in the history of the State of Georgia composed of a parent and three children--practicing law together--who are attorneys!

As Augusta, GA lawyers, we primarily handle divorces, child custody cases, adoptions, personal injury cases, and criminal cases, in both state and federal court. I believe I am the only former twenty year federal prosecutor in the Augusta and Evans, Georgia area. I have handled some of the largest, most complex fraud and public corruption cases in Georgia and U.S. history.

My first two lawyer sons, Richard (Ric) Goolsby, Jr. and Blake Goolsby, with whom I presently practice law in Augusta, both graduated from Mercer Law School. My third son, Zach Goolsby, presently attends the University of Georgia School of Law, which is where I also graduated. He and I will be the two "Double Dawgs" in our family law firm!
